Khao Sok National Park is the largest area of virgin forest in southern Thailand which is older and more diverse than the Amazon rainforest.
Khao Sok National Park is in the Surat Thani Province, Thailand. Its area is 739 km², and it includes the 165 square km Cheow Lan Lake contained by the Ratchaprapha Dam.
The so-called wet season is between late April and December. The temperature ranges from 22 to 36°C all year round. Humidity and warm temperatures provide the optimal environment for a rich ecosystem in this tropical rainforest.
Khao Sok National Park was established in 1980 and it is the 22nd national park within Thailand. It consists of a thick rain forest, stunning waterfalls perfect for the explorer traveller, limestone cliffs, and is surrounded by a clear water lake.


Flora
Khao Sok rainforest is a partial evergreen forest, boasting approximately 200 different flora species, making it one of the most biodiverse areas. Buttress root, banana, bamboo, pitcher plant, liana, fig, coconut palm, dipterocarp tree and rafflesia.
Fauna
Khao Sok is home to many amazing animals, with 48 mammal species, 311 bird species, and 30 bats, and countless reptiles and insects around the Khao Sok kingdom.
Best time to visit Khao Sok
The best time to travel to Khao Sok National Park in Thailand is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to April. During these months, the weather is cooler and less humid, providing ideal conditions for outdoor activities such as trekking, wildlife spotting, and exploring the stunning landscapes.
- December to February: This period features pleasant temperatures, making it perfect for hiking and enjoying the natural beauty of the park. The scenery is lush following the rainy season, and wildlife is often more active.
- March to April: Although temperatures may rise, this period is still popular for visitors. It’s a great time for activities like canoeing and visiting the beautiful Cheow Lan Lake.
- The rainy season, from May to November, brings heavy rainfall and can make some trails slippery and less accessible. However, the park is less crowded during this time, and the lush greenery can be quite beautiful. If you don’t mind occasional rain, visiting during this season can offer a unique experience.
