Getting around Phuket is relatively easy thanks to various local transportation options.
Taxis: Metered taxis are rare, and drivers often refuse to use the meter. Always agree on a fare beforehand. Or head to a taxi rank area, where you will find a taxi pricing list in easy view.
Tuk-tuks: Red mini-trucks, not the same as Bangkok’s tuk-tuks. Tuk-tuks are enjoyable, but they can be quite costly for short trips.
Songthaews (local buses) are open-air trucks with bench seating. The Songthaew, the most affordable option, serves as an excellent means of transportation between major beaches and Phuket Town.
Best time to visit Phuket
The months of November – April are the best to visit Phuket. These are also the best months to travel if you’re planning to explore Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao.

The most convenient and popular way to get to Phuket is by air. Phuket International Airport (HKT) is the second busiest airport in Thailand after Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. It serves numerous international and domestic flights daily. You can fly directly to Phuket from major cities across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Domestic connections from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and other Thai cities are frequent and often budget-friendly.
If you’re already in Thailand, you can reach Phuket by bus or car from places like Bangkok, Krabi, or Surat Thani. driving from Bangkok takes around 10–12 hours by car or coach. Several long-distance buses also operate daily, offering a more economical but slower alternative to flying.
There is no direct train service to Phuket. The closest train station is Surat Thani, about 4–5 hours from Phuket by road. Many travellers take the train to Surat Thani and then continue by bus or van.
Phuket is well connected by ferries and speedboats to nearby islands such as Phi Phi, Krabi, and Koh Lanta. While it’s not the primary means of arrival from the mainland, sea routes are popular among island hoppers exploring the Andaman Sea.
