Chaweng Beach is one of Koh Samui’s most famous and beautiful beaches. Stretching nearly 7 km, it offers vibrant nightlife, excellent accommodations, and plenty of spots to relax by the sea. To help you navigate, this guide breaks Chaweng into three areas: North, Central, and South.
Use this guide as a helpful resource when planning your stay in Chaweng. Chaweng is the busiest village in Koh Samui, with hundreds of hotels to choose from; therefore, I hope our guide helps.
Beach quality: Sand is slightly grittier and waters are calmer – excellent for swimming and relaxing. At low tide the beach is less picturesque than Central and South, but at high tide it becomes quite scenic, especially in the evening. This area runs roughly from Amari Beach Resort to the end of the bay.
Atmosphere & offerings: Quieter and more relaxed than the central zone. Cafés, boutique shops, and quieter beach massage services are common. Expect to rely on local transport or walk, as Beach Road restaurants and shops are few and far between.
Selected resorts include Amari, Sala Chaweng, Sareeraya, La Vida Samui, Dara Samui Beach Resort, Natian, Briza, Beyond Samui (formerly Kanda Buri), Baan Haad Ngam, Chaba Cabana, and OP Bungalows.
Beach quality: The liveliest section with clear blue water and a wide stretch of fine sand. Sand quality and vibe change noticeably from north to central; the area comes alive from late morning into evening.
Atmosphere & offerings: Busy and diverse — beach clubs, upscale resort restaurants, rustic Thai beach bars, shops, sports bars, and a wide range of spas and massage parlours. Exiting any resort places you amid many dining and entertainment options.
What to do: Nightlife, water sports, beach clubs, shopping, dining
Resorts (selected): Muang Samui Beach Resort, Chaweng Regent Beach Resort, Baan Chaweng Beach Resort & Spa, The Library, Buri Rasa, Chaweng Garden Beach Resort, Evergreen, ALS Resort, King’s Garden, Matcha Samui, Montien House, Ark Bar Beach Club & Resort, Elephant Beach Club & Resort, Love Beach Club & Resort, Banana Fan Sea, OZO Resort.
Beach quality: Slightly quieter than Central, with clean sands and inviting waters—ideal for sunbathing and leisurely strolls. The sand is most definitely finer than Chaweng Central Beach.
First Bungalows is the very first accommodation on Chaweng Beach, hence the name. Here is the canal, where you can capture local life with the fishing boats and longtail boats. From here, there is a bridge that connects Chaweng Noi to adjacent Fist Bungalows; to cross, enquire at the resort.
Atmosphere & offerings: A more relaxed vibe with beach bars, water sports, and local food stalls. On the beach road, restaurants and bars become sparse until the First Bungalow area, where you can find bars, restaurants, massages and bike rentals up until the main Chaweng road leading to Chaweng Noi.
Nb: We took a Songteaw local bus from the far end of North Chaweng Beach roadside to First Bungalows for 50 THB each around late morning; however, prices increase after 5 PM and in the late evening.
